Sad news has reached us of the untimely death of John Colborne, aged just 56. John played for Camelot when Highfield was still in its infancy when the clubs regularly met twice a season. The experience of playing against teams like Camelot and Exbury was vital to the development of our club and our green bowlers were often put to the sword in these early encounters. John always used to help himself against us and became only the third player to hit a century versus the Highfield in June 1986. John also took us for a 74 and a 75 in the next two years and to stop him scoring against us Martin Osmond somehow persuaded him to come on tour with us all the way to Northumberland. Predictably he made a duck in that first tour game and couldn't say sorry enough times! He scored a few the next day though, despite being one of the last left in the bar.
Between 1986 and 1996 our clubs met 17 times and John never missed a single fixture, racking up almost 600 runs in the process in a variety of different batting positions. The game of cricket was a lot simpler back then and a lot more sociable and John will be sadly missed for that.
John was still playing League Cricket for Camelot and was still good enough to make the Hampshire League top twenty a couple of years ago, top scoring with 99. Our thoughts go out to his family and numerous team mates. |
